FIELD TRIP

Wednesday 6 November

Departs:  Napier Municipal Theatre 8.30am

Pick up available: Napier airport 8.45am

must be pre-booked via registration form

The field trip is the first day of the conference programme and is included in your registration fee. 

This day sets the tone for the conference and all delegates are encouraged to attend.

Lunch will be provided and we encourage all delegates to bring their own water bottle.

Delegates flying into Napier on Wed morning have the option to meet the field trip at the airport - if you would like to request an airport pick up for the field trip please select this option

when you register online.

Wednesday will be a day of meeting tangata whenua and other expert speakers alongside awa.

We’ll be accompanied by kaiārahi Tipene Cottrell, who will speak to us about local landscape and hapū history, as well as Ngāti Kahungunu taiao (environment) unit staff Ngaio Tiuka and Shade Smith.

Visits will include:

  • Ōtatara Pā. We’ll look out over the Heretaunga floodplains from this nationally significant pā site.

  • Omahu / Fernhill. We’ll discuss leading research on the braidplain aquifer with NIWA and Ngāti Kahungunu staff, and how river management and gravel extraction has affected the aquifer.

  • Pakowhai Regional Park. We’ll walk alongside the historic Ngaruroro Riverbed and discuss the flooding caused by stopbanks in the area.

  • Te Awa o Mokotūāraro (previously known as the Clive River). We’ll hear from tangata whenua about the impacts of diverting the river on their livelihood and people.

  • Ātea-a-Rangi, the Star Compass, Waitangi Estuary. We’ll see where the Ngaruroro and Tutaekurī Rivers meet, and hear from Shade Smith and Piripi Smith about Ātea-a-Rangi and its significance.

  • Ahuriri Estuary. We’ll look upstream towards the historic outlet of the Tūtaekurī River, and discuss the issues the estuary now faces.
